Most colleges and universities have summer programs for high school students. Check their websites to see if a school of your interest has a program for you. Here are some to consider.
Business Horizons

Iowa Private College Week
During the first week in August, Iowa’s 25 private colleges and universities invite you and your parents to explore our campuses, visit with professors, meet coaches, chat with current students, and learn all about academic and social opportunities.
Iowa State University Cy-Tag
This is a 3 week summer program for students in grades 8-11. Students in this residential program live in Iowa State University’s residence halls. Curriculum is a fast paced, yet fully attentive to individual needs and learning styles. Small classes and close working relationships with instructors enrich the student’s experience.
Iowa State University Explorations
Explorations is a one-week residential program for students entering grades 8-12. During this one-week time period, students get a taste of college life while focusing on an area not typically available in their traditional school setting.
University of Iowa- Belin-Blank Programs
Through the Belin-Blank Center students may self nominate for this one-week residential program at the University of Iowa. Courses may be science, technical, humanities, or artistic in nature.
University of Iowa- Secondary Student Training Program
Students who are currently in grades 10-11 may self nominate for the Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP), a six week residential summer research experience. Students will conduct scientific research in university laboratories under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students will also produce a research project/paper as part of the program.
University of Iowa World Languages Institute
Students who are currently in grades 9-11 may nominate themselves for the World Languages Institute (WLI), a one-week residential summer academic program. Students take a single advanced level course for the entire week.
Wartburg College- Leadership Institute
Leadership institute one week each June. The HSLI allows high school juniors to participate in a week-long summer institute where they study and practice leadership skills and service as a form of community and civic engagement. The week is highlighted by a trip to Chicago. Successful project and portfolios may result in 3.5 hours of transferable credit and/or a $1,000 renewable scholarship to Wartburg. March deadline for application.
Wartburg College- IBA Summer Speech Institute
This is a one of a kind camp specifically designed for high school students who participate in Iowa Speech events. Experts teach on a variety of subjects, such as acting, interpretation, characterization, cutting, writing, researching, filming, editing, scene development, and more! Students learn basic skills from experts and get a chance to work hands-on on a project of their own choosing to put those skills into action.
Washington University in St. Louis Summer Scholars Program
Experience the independence of college life in the summer after your junior year in high school. Earn up to seven full college credits, transferable to most accredited colleges and universities, live in the residence halls, and enjoy a variety of social and cultural opportunities.
United States Military Academy Annual Summer Leaders Seminar
This program provides outstanding high school junior the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the academic, physical and leadership development programs at a service academy featuring small classes, a caring faculty, professional career preparation and a foundation for future graduate study. About 500 11th graders will be invited to each session. Students must be in the top fifth of their high school class, pursue a college preparatory curriculum, have strong PSAT scores, have demonstrated leadership potential by participation, election/selection to office and honors earned in extracurricular and organized athletic activities.
University of Missouri-Rolla Nuclear Engineering Camp
This is a one week introduction to Nuclear Engineering for high school juniors, seniors, and college freshmen. Camp will include tours, focus groups, and experiments. For information and application call 573-341-4720 or send email to [email protected].
Simpson College Summer Camp
At Simpson's week-long summer camp, you can "major" in subjects like Harry Potter, mythology, and game design, while "minoring" in areas like politics, fencing, and chemistry. All "majors" are taught by full-time Simpson College professors who will help you develop your academic skills while engaging your imaginations and creativity. Create fun projects and apply what you learn to what's happening in today's world.
SPI Study Abroad
Study abroad in Spain, France, Italy, Costa Rica, or China during the summer. Target Alliance Camp
Week-long need-based overnight camp for youth entering the 5-8 grades identified as not likely to attend or excel in college, but bright students nonetheless. During their week at camp, campers will take several field trips to explore a variety of post-high school options including labor unions, community college, vocational schools, Americorps, and more!
